When Professor Ehrig officially announced his retirement, the plans for his retirement party were put in motion. The party was arranged by Art & Cindy McLaughlin, and was held at the Syracuse Suds Factory (in conjunction with the NYSAPLS 2000 Conference in Syracuse, NY).
During the 1999 Fall Semester at Alfred, the McLaughlins
sent a mailing to all graduates of SUNY Alfred's programs in Surveying
Engineering Technology, as well as to Herb's friends, family, and associates.
More than 150 graduates, and members of the Surveying Profession stopped
in for the party.
On the night of the party, we gathered at the Suds Factory around 7:15 PM. Herb was coming to the party with his wife Ellen (she was in on it) under the pretense of "having dinner with the McLaughlins." He suspected that something was going on, and attempted (unsuccessfully) to get information from his colleagues at the conference. When the Ehrig's arrived at the Suds Factory, Herb was genuinely surprised - I don't think he suspected the party was going to be so large!
